Roberta Lynn Bondar , CC , O.Ont , FRSC (born December 4, 1945 in Sault Ste. Marie , Ontario , Canada ) is a former Canadian astronaut .
In 1968 she received a Bachelor's degree in Zoology and Livestock from the University of Guelph , followed three years later with a Masters in Experimental Pathology from the University of Western Ontario . The University of Toronto received her PhD in Neurobiology in 1974 and McMaster University in Human Medicine in 1977. In addition, she has received several honorary doctorates. In 1998 she was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame .
In 1983, Bondar was selected as an astronaut for the Canadian space program. On board the space shuttle Discovery , she was part of the crew of the STS-42 mission , which lasted eight days.
In 1992, Bondar resigned from the Canadian Space Agency's astronaut corps and devoted himself to academic work. In 2003 she became principal of Trent University .
