Robin FA Moritz

Robin Frederik Alexander Moritz (born August 28, 1952 in Gießen ) is a biologist and ecologist .

Life

Robin Moritz was born in Giessen as the son of Richard Moritz and his wife Wilhelmina nee Gijsbers. He went to school in Frankfurt am Main and graduated from the Carl Schurz School in 1971 . Moritz studied biology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and graduated in 1976 with a diploma. He then worked at the Institute for Apiculture in Oberursel (Taunus) , which at that time was still under the direction of Friedrich Ruttner . He cumulatively defended his dissertation on inbreeding effects on the fitness of drones ( Apis mel. ) In November 1980 . Moritz completed his habilitation at the University of Frankfurt in February 1987. He then worked at the Bavarian State Institute for Beekeeping in Erlangen . In July 1991 he accepted a professorship for genetics at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg , two months later he became professor for genetics at the Technical University of Berlin . Moritz was Professor of Molecular Ecology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg between 1997 and 2018 and has retired in 2018 . From 1999–2016 he was also an Extraordinary Professor in the Department of Zoology and Entomology at the University of Pretoria , where he was a member of the Social Insects Research Group (SIRG) .

From 2011 to 2014 Robin Moritz was International Director in the Romanian RoBeeTech project of the Universitatea de Ştiinţe Agricole şi Medicină Veterinară din Cluj-Napoca . In 2013 he was awarded an honorary doctorate (Dr. hc) by the University of Cluj . He received numerous other honors such as the 1998 Humboldt Research Award . Robin Moritz is also a full member of the German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) with the research area Bee Molecular Ecology .
