Robin Thiesmeyer (* 1979 in Bonn ) is a German cartoonist , author and copywriter. Under the pseudonym meta bene , he became known on social media with his minimalist drawings that are reminiscent of Japanese ink painting .

Life

Thiesmeyer studied philosophy, political science and history at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . He studied creative writing and cultural journalism at the University of Hildesheim . He is doing his doctorate on short text forms of advertising communication at the Berlin University of the Arts . He lives in Berlin as the father of two children .

Drawing work

Since 2013, Thiesmeyer has been drawing ink miniatures under his pseudonym of a speaking world of strokes, which he initially published on Twitter at the suggestion of his former teacher Stephan Porombka . He says of the minimalist nature of his calligraphic drawings: “Actually, these are all abstract cattle that always make the same movements. I just turn the swing back and forth ”. His thoughtful, sarcastic, distant or melancholy animals ask philosophical and naive questions, find surprising answers, comment on everyday situations, twist idioms, make jokes and think about themselves or the meaning of life: “I want to play with language in a way that is fun does, express things that do something to the head, but in such a way that you can understand it after work ”. Since the "critters" have no face, their expression is limited to body language, alignment and group constellation. Based on a cockroach, which usually appears in swarms and became the artist's logo, meta bene lets birds, penguins, “ existentialist fish and snails, depressed antelopes and hearty beetles” speak, think and philosophize.

In 2016 meta bene drew a weekly comic column for Zeit Online in the free text section under the title “Critters about ...”. In the same year his first illustrated book There are more stars than idiots was published . In 2017, the Bert-Brecht-Haus in Oberhausen showed a selection of his works, which Thiesmeyer himself describes as "pseudo-Zen", in a solo exhibition.
