Roche Bobois is a French company that sells furniture in the upper price segment.

history

In 1950, French furniture retailer Jacques Roche bought the building at 18 Rue de Lyon in Paris to use as a furniture sales room. The historic building was rented as a theater by Alexandre Dumas for a few years in 1865 . Roche's father, Fernand, had started buying up furniture companies in Paris in 1898 and turned it into a furniture wholesaler called Établissements Roche . In 1960, Jacques Roche's sons Philippe and François, who had worked in their father's furniture company since 1959, met Jean-Claude and Patrick Chouchan at the furniture fair in Copenhagen . The ancestors of the Chouchans, Belarusian Jews, had emigrated to France, where Albert Chouchan, father of Jean-Claude and Patrick, had opened a furniture store called Au Beau Bois (German for beautiful wood ) on Paris Boulevard Sebastopol in 1923 . The young Roches and Chouchans therefore had the idea of importing Scandinavian furniture to Paris. The two families therefore decided to expand their stores with “gift” boutiques to sell Scandinavian accessories. In 1960 the first shop was opened on Paris' Boulevard Saint-Germain; further branches followed. These boutiques were initially called “Compléments d'objets” and had textiles, tableware and wallpapers in their range. Finally, an agreement was reached to found the Roche Bobois company (initially Boboisroche and Rochebobois ) from the Roches furniture business and the Chouchan's Au Beau Bois business . The building, which was once used by Dumas as a theater, still houses a Roche Bobois flagship store today .

In 1961, the first national advertising campaign was carried out in Elle magazine . This was switched twice a year for about the next 50 years. The first joint catalog and a franchise system without its own production were founded, which was a form of business model for the time. In 1965 the first store opened in Belgium .

In 1970, Philippe Roche and his team met the designer Hans Hopfer during a trip to Germany. He designed a sofa for Roche Bobois that was launched on the market under the name “Lounge”. Since 1990 it has been Roche Bobois' global bestseller under the name " Mah Jong ".

The first store outside of Europe opened in Canada in 1973 . In the following year, branches in the USA and Spain followed . In the 1980s, the range of the "Les Provinciales" collection for new country house owners was expanded. The company responded to the trend for ethnic furniture with the “Les Voyages” collection, which came onto the market in the 1990s. In 1995 the first store opened in Italy .

At the beginning of the 21st century there were two significant production developments at Roche Bobois. On the one hand, the international development was driven forward with the establishment of stores worldwide; on the other hand, cooperations were developed with designers , architects and fashion designers who create furniture and objects for the brand.

In 2004, the first store opened in the People's Republic of China , which marked the opening of the hundredth store abroad. The company has been organizing a design competition since 2009, first in China, then Morocco and 2012 in Great Britain. The aim is to discover local talent who create creations for a specific topic. This is how the AVA chair, for example, was created, designed by a Chinese designer and manufactured by an Italian manufacturer.

Since 2011, the brand has been represented in 45 countries with 250 stores. 80 of these are in-house branches. In 2012, the company generated more than half of its sales internationally for the first time, which is mainly attributed to the growth in the North American market. The brand has been represented there with the New York-Madison store since 1974, making North America the second mainstay of Roche Bobois.

In 2013 Roche Bobois strengthened its international presence with the opening of 15 additional stores in more than ten countries such as B. Singapore, Colombia, Indonesia or Bulgaria. But also in Frankfurt, on the Hanauer Landstrasse design mile .
