history

Rochester's history dates back to 1852 when the city was founded by Samuel James.

Residents

In 2007 Rochester had 2094 inhabitants. Of these, 1052 are male and 1042 are female. The median age is 32.5 years, which is around three years below the average age in Washington state. In Rochester, 84.4% of the population are white, 10.4% are of Latin American origin ( Hispanics ), 5.5% are of another ethnic group, 3.2% are of two ethnic groups, and 3.1% are Native Americans. The average household size is 2.8 people and 78.1% of all residents live with their families. 6.8% live with an unmarried partner. Around 19.2% of the population have German ancestors, followed by Ireland (11.6%), England (8.9%), USA (6.1%), Norway (5.9%) and Scotland. (5.5%).

economy

After its foundation, the economy of the place was strongly influenced by the timber industry. The first sawmill was founded in the 1880s. After the decline of the timber industry, Rochester now lives mainly from growing strawberries. Many Rochester residents now work in the surrounding cities.
