Rockstar Energy Drink (spelling on the product: ROCKST ★ R ENERGY DRINK) is an energy drink developed in 2001 and available in Germany since 2008 . It is sold by Rockstar, Inc. in North America and by PepsiCo in Germany . In 2013, more than 20 flavors were brought onto the market in more than 30 countries, and at the end of 2015 13 of them were available in Germany.
History, sales and reference
At the beginning, Rockstar positioned itself as a cheap alternative to Red Bull , offered more flavors and focused on beverage cans with more content. In the first six years from 2001 onwards, the brand made a steady, steep development. From 2007 this slowed down noticeably, but in 2015 Rockstar was still by far the third largest energy drink manufacturer after Red Bull and Monster Energy . Former employees attribute this, among other things, to a significantly lower advertising budget compared to the competition. From 2005 there was a sales deal with Coca-Cola , which was dissolved in 2009 after disagreements. A contract was subsequently concluded with PepsiCo .
Founder Russell Weiner holds 85% of the shares in Rockstar; his mother, who also acts as CFO , the remaining 15%.
On January 31, 2018, the Spanish Supreme Court ruled that Rockstar Inc. had committed 16 years of trademark infringement against Town Music SL, based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria . RockStar Inc. has been obliged to remove and destroy all energy drink products in Spain from retailers by March 2018. In 1999, Roger Jean Herrmann , who is of German origin and lives in Gran Canaria, registered a brand of the same name under which he offered various rock star beers and energy drinks in his bar.
Rockstar is available in Germany at many petrol stations and in almost every supermarket. Rockstar also offers online shipping that sells energy drinks and merchandise.
Content and consumption
The exact composition of Rockstar is treated as a company secret. In addition to caffeine , Rockstar contains guarana , ginseng and taurine .
The manufacturer himself names anxiety , hyperactivity as possible side effects and, in the event of excessive consumption, a greatly increased heart rate and high blood pressure . Strong side effects can occur in the interaction of energy drinks with alcohol , and there is also a risk of dependence developing with long-term consumption .
The European Commission advises "children, pregnant or breastfeeding women and people who are sensitive to caffeine" against consumption, which has been mandatory since July 1, 2004 for all energy drinks with a caffeine content of over 150 mg per liter Notice on the container is made clear.
Rockstar has been criticized by Men's Health , among others, for its high sugar content of 15.3% . According to Stiftung Warentest , Rockstar is not suitable for quenching thirst due to its high caffeine and sugar content. The energy drink should not be used to cover up tiredness and exhaustion in the long term.
Since June 2016 Rockstar introduces a new product line with two new "Organic" -Energy drinks that appeal to the EU Organic Regulation of the European Union hold.
In spring 2017, a new design was introduced on all cans. The star is now bigger, the flavor is below it, and the ROCKSTAR logo and the name of the variety are only on the right side.
