life and work

O'Conor studied painting in Dublin from 1879 to 1883 and then in Antwerp until 1884 before moving to Paris , where he was influenced by French Impressionism . In 1892 he moved to Pont-Aven in Brittany . There he joined the so-called School of Pont-Aven , a post-impressionist group of artists around Paul Gauguin , with whom he was also friends. Some of his pictures from this period are reminiscent of works by Vincent van Gogh . After 1900, his style, which was characterized by expressive brushstrokes and strong colors, approached Fauvism and Expressionism .

In March 2011, one of his pictures sold for 337,250 British pounds (383,993 euros) at an auction at Sotheby’s .
