Rodi Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou ( Greek Ρόδη Κράτσα-Τσαγκαροπούλου , born April 15, 1953 in Zakynthos ) is a Greek politician of the conservative party Nea Dimokratia (ND) and a member . From 2007 to January 2012 she was Vice-President of the European Parliament .

Life

Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou studied sociology with a focus on political sociology at the University of Geneva , where he completed a postgraduate course at the Institute for European Studies. She also took part in the activities of the European Cultural Center in Geneva , of which she became a member in 2004. From 1987 Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou held various party offices in the ND; Among other things, she was a member of the Secretariat for International Relations, the Secretariat for Local Self-Government and the Secretariat for Women's Affairs. In 1998 she was elected city councilor in Athens .

In the 1999 European elections , Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou won a seat in the European Parliament for the first time , where, like all ND members, she joined the Group of the European People's Party . She was re-elected in the 2004 and 2009 European elections . From January 2007 to January 2012 she was Vice-President of Parliament .

During her time as an MP, Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou was a member of various parliamentary committees: in the 2004-09 legislative period in the Committee on Transport and Tourism , the Committee on Budgetary Control and the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality ; in the 2009–14 legislative period in the Equal Opportunities Committee and in the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs . The areas in which Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou was involved in these committees included marine protection , gender equality and the Euro-Mediterranean partnership . From 2004 to 2009 she was a member of the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly , which also fell within her remit as Vice-President. In addition, as Vice-President, she was responsible for the Mediation Committee under the co-decision procedure .

In addition, Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou pursued civil society activities. In 1989 she co-founded and chaired the European Center for Communication and Information in Athens, and in 1998 she became vice-chairman of the Greek section of the European Movement . She was also co-founder of the Greek section of the Union of European Federalists . Since 1999 she has been chairwoman of the Brussels- based International Organization for the Support of Women in Europe. Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou has received various awards for her work: Among other things, she was Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor in 2004 for her contribution to European integration , and in 2007 she received the Anna Lindh Foundation Prize for Gender Equality. In 2008 she was named by the Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III. appointed Knight of the Holy Sepulcher by Jerusalem .

Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou is married to Apostolos Kratsas , a former Greek MP and transport minister of the ND. The couple have two children.
