Rodolfo Lenz , actually Rudolf Heinrich Robert Lenz , naturalized in Chile as Rudolf Lenz Danziger (born September 10, 1863 in Halle an der Saale ; † September 7, 1938 in Santiago de Chile ), was a German Romance scholar and linguist who emigrated to Chile in 1890 .

Life

Rudolf Lenz was a high school student in Bremen, Breslau, Cologne and Metz . He studied in Berlin (with Adolf Tobler ) and Bonn (with Wendelin Foerster ) and received his doctorate in Bonn in 1886 with On the Physiology and History of Palatals (Gütersloh 1887). From 1887 to 1889 he was a teacher of French and English in Cologne and Wolfenbüttel. In 1890 he went to Chile (around the same time as Friedrich Hanssen ) and also taught French and English at the Instituto Pedagógico de la Universidad de Chile , from 1895 also Spanish grammar, became rector of the institute in 1922 and retired in 1925. In 1909 he founded the Sociedad de Folklore Chileno. Lenz earned merits in researching the Araucanian languages and their folklore, their influence on the spoken Spanish colloquial language in Chile and in the scientific description of the Chilean variety of Spanish itself, as well as Papiamentu .

His daughter, the writer Herta Lenz de Brüggen (* 1895), married the German-Chilean geologist Johannes Brüggen in 1913 .
