Rodrigo Felinto Ibarra Epitácio Maia (born June 12, 1970 in Santiago de Chile ) is a Brazilian politician of the Democratas (DEM). Since 1999 he has been a federal representative for the state of Rio de Janeiro and since 2016 President of the Chamber of Deputies of the National Congress .

Life

Rodrigo Maia comes from the influential Maia family of politicians. His father is the former city prefect of Rio de Janeiro César Maia , his mother is Mariangeles Ibarra Maia. One cousin is the former senator and ex-governor of Rio Grande do Norte José Agripino Maia .

He studied economics at the private Universidade Candido Mendes . From 1990 to 1997 he worked for the banks Banco BMG and Banco Icatu , then with the city prefecture in Rio de Janeiro. In April 2012 he received honorary citizenship of the state of Rio de Janeiro. He is married to Patrícia Vasconcelos Maia, with her he has three daughters and two sons.

Political career

Maia changed party membership several times, he was a member of the Partido da Frente Liberal (PFL) from 1998 to 1999, of the Partido Trabalhista Brasileiro (PTB) from 1999 to 2001, again from 2001 to 2007 of the PFL and from 2007 of the Democratas (DEM) , here he was national president of the party from March 26, 2007 to December 6, 2011.

At the age of 28, he ran for the 1998 elections in Brazil as a member of the Chamber of Deputies and was elected with 96,385 valid votes. In 2002 he was re- elected with 117,229 votes, again in the 2006 elections with 198,770 votes, in the 2010 elections with 86,162 votes and continued in 2014 and 2018 for his sixth term.

At an anti-democratic demonstration by President Jair Bolsonaro in April 2020, his supporters called for Rodrigo Maia to resign.

Controversy

Maia has been under investigation as part of Operation Lava Jato since 2017 .
