Roger Angel

James Roger Prior Angel (born February 7, 1941 in St Helens , Lancashire , England ) is an American astronomer of British origin.

Angel studied at St. Peter's College, Oxford University (BA 1963), the California Institute of Technology (MS 1966) and received his doctorate in 1967 from Oxford University. He was a professor at Columbia University . Since 1975 he has been professor of astronomy and optical sciences at the University of Arizona , where he heads the Mirror Laboratory , in which mirrors up to over 8 meters in diameter are manufactured for large astronomical telescopes.

Angel is known for his innovative contributions to the development of astronomical instruments and telescope construction, and suggested methods for the detection and study of exoplanets . He also deals with questions of energy generation from solar energy. In 2006 he made a proposal to curb global warming with a parasol in space.
