Charles Roger Hargreaves (born May 9, 1935 in Cleckheaton , West Yorkshire , England , † September 11, 1988 in Tunbridge Wells , Kent ) was a British children's author and illustrator .

Life

He became famous with the series Our Little Ladies and Gentlemen (originally: Mr. Men ). He published 46 stories in picture books. He also published a series of 33 picture books dedicated to the "Little Miss". The 25 Timbuctoo books were one of Hargreaves' many other children's book series. His books are still in great demand and achieve top prices among enthusiasts.

Hargreaves lived with his family on Guernsey from 1979 to 1982 . He then moved to Sussex House Farm near Cowden , Kent. He died at the age of 53 from complications from a stroke at Sussex Hospital in Tunbridge Wells. By the time he died, he had sold around 85 million books translated into 15 languages ​​in 22 countries. His estate continues to publish works under his name, most of which are written and illustrated by Hargreaves' son Adam.

Since September 2010 the Mister Men and Little Miss series has been published in the original design, original format and new translation by Nele Maar and Lisa Buchner by Susanna Rieder Verlag in Munich. Published are Mister Happy , Mr. Perfect , Mr. Conversely , Mr. Schlotter , Miss hoax , Miss gloss , Miss Opinionated and Miss somersault . In 2011, 16 more volumes followed in the series.
