Roger Vailland

Roger Vailland (born October 16, 1907 in Acy-en-Multien in Picardy , † May 12, 1965 in Meillonnas near Bourg-en-Bresse ) was a French writer, essayist and journalist. His works include novels, plays, scripts, travelogues, and diaries.

As a young man in Paris, Vailland co-founded the literary-esoteric artist group Le Grand Jeu . He spent his years as a reporter in Paris and Lyon . During the war he joined the Resistance ; after the liberation he traveled a lot. He wrote a number of dedicated books, including the Prix ​​Interallié- winning novel Strange Game (1945) and the Prix ​​Goncourt- winning novel Hart auf Hart (1957). Vailland openly professed communism , but from 1951 he and his wife lived in seclusion in the country. The novel 325,000 francs was a pamphlet against capitalism that was very popular.

His life was marked by many problems, including alcohol. He died of lung cancer. His books continue to be published in France, with a large number of posthumous first publications, including in particular correspondence, diaries and essays.
