The Roggenmühle Lehndorf is a former large industrial mill for grain from 1912 in the Braunschweig district of Lehndorf right next to the slip road to the 391 federal motorway . Since its decommissioning in 1987, it stands as an industrial monument under monument protection .
history
The Roggenmühle Lehndorf AG was built in 1912 in several construction phases according to plans by the architect Otto Orlishausen by the " Maschinenfabrik und Mühlenbauanstalt G. Luther AG, Braunschweig " in solid brick construction on Hannoversche Strasse after it was founded in 1912 with the participation of Mühle Rüningen AG . The operator was the “Braunschweiger Roggenmühle AG” . For a long time, the mill served as a test facility for the nearby Mühlenbau- und Industrieaktiengesellschaft (MIAG). In 1915 a boiler house was added and a drying plant followed in 1916. In 1934 the water tower was built for the safety of the mill, so that in the event of a fire there would be enough water pressure for the sprinkler system independent of the municipal water network . The striking tower is the landmark of the mill and Lehndorf.
In its almost 100-year history, the approximately 100 m long and up to 30 m high mill (without tower) burned three times: The first time in 1913, but without serious damage, a second time on October 11, 1914, as a single, just now completed grain silo was on fire. The destroyed silo was immediately rebuilt. The third and largest fire broke out on April 24, 2007 and destroyed the entire silo area (see below).
On 28 January 1921, took place merger of "Braunschweiger rye mill AG" with the still existing "Mill Rüningen GmbH & Co. KG" . During the heaviest air raid on Braunschweig on October 15, 1944 , the Lehndorfer mill was also badly damaged. Its reconstruction was completed in 1948. Between 1952 and 1953 the mill was converted from steam operation to electricity .
In 1987 the operation of the mill was ended and the entire complex was placed under monument protection, but the use of the silos for the Rüninger mill was continued until 1999. Parts of the mill technology were sold to South Africa after the shutdown in 1987 .
Renovation and renovation
The first plans for a new use of the building complex existed in the early 1990s, but were not implemented. Finally, after almost 20 years of vacancy, investors began renovation work in 2006.
Major fire
On Tuesday evening, April 24, 2007, there was a smoldering fire caused by flying sparks in the silo wing of the mill, which was located in the northern part of the building , which initially went undetected. Due to the dry weather and the presence of abundant flammable material (the silos and large parts of the other facilities in the building wing were made of wood), the seven-story, approx. 30 m high silos quickly caught fire. The temperatures at the source of the fire reached around 1000 ° C, so that the steel girders lost their strength inside the building. The extinguishing work proved difficult and lasted into the evening hours of April 25th. A total of around 300 fire fighters from Braunschweig and the surrounding area as well as emergency services from the technical relief organization were involved.
Consequences of the fire
The emergency services could not prevent the partial collapse of the east and west sides of the silo complex. In order to prevent an uncontrolled collapse, the silos were torn down in the following days.
Since the responsible monument protection authority and the investor did not come to an agreement to rebuild the silo area, it was decided not to restore it. The fire delayed the opening of the converted Lehndorfer mill by a few months to early 2008. The brick facade was subjected to a special cleaning process, damaged areas in the masonry were repaired and the entire outer skin of the building was then sealed.
Todays use
By the end of 2011, no agreement was reached regarding the collapsed silo complex. The remaining area of the Roggenmühle was expanded: In addition to hairdressers and medical practices as well as offices and practices for physiotherapy and physiotherapy, three restaurants have set up in the lower part.
