Roland Bothner

Roland Bothner (born January 15, 1953 in Walheim in the Ludwigsburg district in Baden-Württemberg ) is a German philosopher , art historian and writer.

Life

After graduating from high school in Besigheim in 1973, he studied art history and philosophy, German, sociology and political science at the universities of Tübingen, Munich, Bern, Heidelberg and Frankfurt am Main from 1973 to 1981 . From 1977 to 1983 Bothner was a lecturer at the Volkshochschule Stuttgart and at the evening academy in Mannheim. In 1981 he received his doctorate in philosophy at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main with the thesis “Art in the System. The Constructive Function of Art for Ernst Bloch's Philosophy ” with Professors Alfred Schmidt and Hermann Schweppenhäuser . Afterwards he was a lecturer at the University of Frankfurt in the field of comparative literature and art history until 1986. In addition, until 1989 he had a teaching position at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen in art history.

In 1986 Bothner was a founding member of the international Ernst Bloch Society in Ludwigshafen and a member of the Heidelberg research group for art, literature and culture. He received his habilitation in 1996 at the University of Bremen in the subject of art history with the text “Grund und Figur. Auguste Rodin's Hell Gate and the History of the Relief ” . In 1997 he founded the publishing house “Edition Publish & Parish” and the philosophical practice “Concept and Category” . In 2007 he was appointed professor.

His scientific work was supported by personal acquaintance with the philosophers and scientists Max Bense , Dieter Jähnig , Gershom Scholem and Shmuel Sambursky .

His examination of the art of the fifties and personal acquaintance with Gerhard Hoehme , with KRH Sonderborg , an action painter , and with Raimund Girke , who examined the constitutional conditions of painting , had a defining effect on his Bothners work .
