Roland Gööck (1958)

Roland Gööck (born September 29, 1923 in Felchta ; † October 2, 1991 in Regensburg ) was a German editor, non-fiction author and lecturer, who worked mainly for Bertelsmann Verlag from 1954 .

life and career

Roland Gööck was born the son of a pastor in Thuringia; the ancestors on the paternal side were named Jöök and came from the Baltic States .

Gööck's first book, the utopian detective novel Corix , was published in 1948 under the pseudonym Peter Roland.

From 1954 to 1962 Gööck was Bertelsmann's press officer. At the end of the 1950s he published new editions of the works by Jules Verne (Sigbert Mohn Verlag, Vier-Falken-Verlag) and Robinson Crusoe (Sigbert Mohn Verlag, Bertelsmann Lesering) and in 1958 edited a biography of Zarah Leander for Bertelsmann based on the series of the same name in the Bild newspaper of Max Pierre Schaeffer . Editions of Karl May books for Bertelsmann Verlag, Mosaik Verlag (Hamburg), Scherz Verlag (Bern) and Phoenix Verlag (Bern / Munich), Heidi (Bertelsmann Lesering, Phoenix Verlag) followed in the early 1960s, at the end of the 1960s Years Onkel Toms Hütte (Bertelsmann, Scherz Verlag) and Wilhelm Busch's Hausapotheke (Praesentverlag Peter).

1962 marked the beginning of Roland Gööck's non-fiction career. He suggested to Bertelsmann that they create a large cookbook for the Bertelsmann Lesering ; the book overtook all circulation records in the first quarter of 1963. In the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, Gööck wrote more than 230 non-fiction books and illustrated books under his own name (board games, cookbooks) but also under various pseudonyms, each of which was chosen for certain subject groups:

Roland M. Gööck (including football), Lutz Adron (general knowledge), Pim Pinelli (spices of the world) , Peter Roland, Alexander Ettl (recipe books for fish, cheese, spices), Alex Ettl (architecture, cookbooks), Roland Gek (only used for books in Serbia), Roland Gēks (great inventions ...) , Rolf Jeromin ("cosmopolitan" topics: wine advice, culinary cuisine worldwide, travelogues), Peter Korn (Karl May books), Franz Mausener (humorous topics) and Peggy Persson (Wilhelm Busch's medicine cabinet) .

At Bertelsmann Gööck had the title of non-fiction-Goethe , others described him as a “prolific writer” and “non-fiction all-rounder” or as a “jack-of-all-trades” and “millionaire”. In 1983 his 230 books had a total print run of 41.5 million, including the leading German non-fiction book Das neue Große Kochbuch (3 million edition), All the wonders of this world (2 million) and Der Mensch in seine Welt ( 12 volumes, together 12 million).

In addition to the diversity of the topics he worked on, the speed of publications was Gööck's specialty. For the first time at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome , Gööck and his team ensured that the first illustrated books were in bookshops just four days after the closing ceremony. Further "Gööck'sche Schnellschüsse" ( branch jargon ) were made with illustrated books within just three days at soccer and athletics world championships and the Olympic Games.

“After the first book, I started to enjoy myself. Today I write books because every book plan is a new big adventure for me, because I learn a lot from everyone and because I think it's an important and good thing to simply express simple things. "
