Rolando of Dol

Rolando OSB (* in Pisa ; † December 1187 in Verona or March 4, 1188 ) was an Italian bishop and cardinal .

He was from Pisa, but probably studied in France, where he held the office of dean of the Church of Avranches . 1177 he was a unanimous vote of the Cathedral Chapter to Bishop of Dol-de-Bretagne selected, but the Archbishop of Tours denied him the episcopal ordination . That is why Rolando went to Rome in 1180. Pope Lucius III consecrated him as subdeacon of the Holy Roman Church and sent him as a legate to England and Scotland in 1181 to make peace between King William of Scotland and the Bishop of St. Andrews.

According to some chroniclers, he received from Lucius III in 1184. episcopal ordination, according to other sources, he was consecrated bishop following his election by Henry II , Bishop of Bayeux and Richard III, Bishop of Avranches in the presence of Robert de Torigny , Abbot of Mont Saint-Michel .

On the Friday of March 15, 1185, Lucius III raised him. the cardinal Deacon S. Maria in portico; as such he signed papal privileges from March 31, 1185 to September 21, 1187. On August 16, 1186, together with Cardinal Soffredo of S. Maria in Via Lata, he decided a dispute over the parish boundaries in Verona.

There are contradicting information about the date of his death, possibly he died shortly before the election of Pope Clement III. on December 19, 1187; others give as the date of death March 4, 1188.
