Rolf Dahlgren

Rolf Martin Theodor Dahlgren (born July 7, 1932 in Örebro , † February 14, 1987 in Skåne ) was a Swedish botanist . He was a professor at the University of Copenhagen . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " R.Dahlgren ".

life and work

Dahlgren, the son of a pharmacist, studied at Lund University with a master's degree in biology in 1959 and a doctorate in botany in 1964 (dissertation: Studies on Aspalathus and some related genera in South Africa). Then he was a lecturer at the Institute for Systematic Botany in Lund and dealt in particular with South African plants, for which he was on excursions in South Africa in 1956/57 and 1965/66. In 1973 he became a professor in Copenhagen (although he stayed in Lund). He died in a car accident.

He is known for a taxonomic system of angiosperms and especially monocot , whereby he also included chemistry. In this context he is also known for a graphic representation, the Dahlgrenogram.

In 1986 he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . In the same year he received the Linnaeus Prize of the Royal Physiographical Society in Lund .

After his death, his wife, the botanist Gertrud Dahlgren, continued his taxonomic work.

Honors

The genus of South African laurel family Dahlgrenodendron J.JMvan der Merve & AE van Wyk was named after him in 1988.

The Physiographische Gesellschaft in Lund has been awarding the Rolf Dahlgren Prize in Botany every three years since 1988.
