Rolf Maedel

Rolf Maedel (born March 17, 1917 in Berlin ; † January 9, 2000 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian composer , conductor and music theorist . Together with Franz Richter Herf he developed the Ekmelic Tone System .

Live and act

Rolf Maedel was born the son of a gunsmith and received piano lessons from the age of 7. He graduated from the Humboldt School in Berlin in 1936 and attended the Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory until 1937. He then studied at the State Academic University of Music with professors W. Wolf (piano), K. Thomas (choir conducting), W. Gmeindel (conducting) and E. Pepping (composition) and in 1938 passed the music teacher examination in piano and choir conducting. During his military service he also took part in so-called Wehrmacht tours, one of which led through Salzburg. Because of their success, he was given two study vacations at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, where he studied with Clemens Krauss , Walter Lampe , Friedrich Frischenschlager and Meinhard Zeilinger until 1943.

After the war, Rolf Maedel was initially a freelance artist. Under the influence of Johann Nepomuk David , a large number of piano and chamber music compositions and songs were created during this time. He worked as a freelancer at RWR (as a soloist, accompanist and radio play composer) and undertook several tours and concert tours through Europe, as a lied and instrumental accompanist, as a member of the Salzburg Chamber Trio , as a conductor and as assistant to Bernhard Paumgartner . In 1947 he was appointed as a contract teacher at the Mozarteum, from 1950 he was musical director of the opera studio founded by Bernhard Paumgartner. In 1962 he was appointed professor, in 1974 as associate professor and in 1976 as full professor and retired in 1987.

From 1970 he devoted himself together with Franz Richter Herf to the research and systematization of microtones . This led to the development of Ekmelic music . In 1972 he co-founded the Institute for Basic Musical Research and in 1981 the Society for Ekmelic Music (later International Society for Ekmelic Music ).
