Rolf Overberg (born October 29, 1933 in Osnabrück ; † December 14, 1993 there ) was a German ceramic artist .

Life

Overberg began an apprenticeship in 1955 in the ceramics workshop of Ruth Landmann , Osnabrück, a student of Wim Mühlendyck . From 1957 to 1960 he studied at the Werkkunstschule Münster with Irene Brinkhaus (ceramics) and Carl Ehlers (sculpture). In 1960 he founded his own workshop in Osnabrück. In 1962 he married Lisa Achelpohl, who had worked in her husband's workshop since the birth of their two children. In 1965 the studio was relocated to the city center of Osnabrück and since then has been operated in association with the graphic artist Johannes Eidt and - for a few years - with the sculptor Hermann auf der Heide .

In 1967 Overberg received the Lower Saxony State Prize, in 1968 the 3rd Prize at the Concorso internazionale della Ceramica d'Arte in Cervia, Italy, and in 1969 the Prize for International Crafts in Stuttgart. In 1971 Overberg traveled to Japan to study the centuries-old tradition of Japanese ceramics, which was then reflected primarily in the use of wood ash glazes . In 1972 he participated in the International Ceramic Symposium in Stoob, Austria. In the following year he received the honorary award for "Ceramic Objects" at the Westerwald Prize for Ceramics in Höhr-Grenzhausen , 1974 the "Mention honorable" at the "North German Tree Competition" in Hildesheim. Also in 1974 Overberg took part in the International Ceramic Symposium in Mettlach / Saar. In 1975 he was declared Membre de l'Académie Internationale de la Ceramique in Geneva, Switzerland. As such, in 1984 he was one of the founding members of Gruppe 83 , the association of German members of the Geneva Académie. In 1982 the ceramist took part in the International Ceramic Symposium in Cork , Ireland , and in 1983 in the German-Russian Symposium in Höhr-Grenzhausen.

The death of his wife Lisa in 1986 brought a noticeable break in the artist's work. In 1989 he married again. A few days after the opening of the exhibition in the cultural history museum Osnabrück on the occasion of his 60th birthday, Rolf Overberg fell into a coma after a brain bleeding in his workshop and died a few weeks later.

Overberg used the possibilities of ceramics in various fields. At the beginning of his activity, the focus of his work was on pots, vases, bowls and tea sets turned on the potter's wheel. But very early on, animals and free sculptures were created in this way, for which he added or deformed twisted shapes. He was also active early on in the field of building ceramics. Later he relied heavily on hanging objects, for which he made use of the imprints of newspaper mats in the clay. At the same time, animals were created that were cut out of leather-hard clay cubes, especially snails and owls in ever new variations. Reliefs and building ceramics orders increased over time, while work on the potter's wheel lost more and more importance. With the death of his first wife Lisa, Overberg's work changed insofar as he discovered people as objects. After having hardly played a role in the work of the ceramist for 25 years, this was now imprinted on clay tablets, worked into reliefs as a multiplied torso and depicted as an almost life-size Venus. Landscapes were created at the same time, both as relief and sculpture. They were the subject of his last exhibition. Rolf Overberg's work can be seen in many museums and public collections.
