Rolf Roth (painter)

Rolf Roth (born February 14, 1888 in Solothurn ; † April 12, 1985 in Chexbres , Canton of Vaud ), pseudonym : Lucifer , resident in Solothurn, was a Swiss caricaturist , painter and writer .

Life

Rolf Roth, son of the cloth merchant Engelbert Roth and Adele née Munzinger, a graduate of the commercial school in Solothurn and an apprenticeship as a tailor in Neuchâtel , Nyon and Lausanne , then attended the academies of fine arts in Dresden and Munich and the trade school in Basel from 1909 to 1915 . Roth subsequently worked for numerous newspapers, including the Basler Nachrichten , Pariser L'Illustration and the Nebelspalter , from 1925 to 1958 as a drawing teacher at the Cantonal School in Solothurn and from 1931 to 1969 as editor of the Solothurn carnival newspaper Lucifer.

Rolf Roth, who emerged as a landscape painter , portraitist , draftsman, caricaturist and writer, who received a federal art grant in 1921 , created 187 portrait sketches for the illustrated and complete guide through the earthquake in the Swiss National Council Chamber, published in 1919, and published an album Souvenir de la première Assemblée de la Société des Nations , published between 1920 and 1939, in which he presented drawings from the halls of the League of Nations .

Rolf Roth, who was married to Frieda, the daughter of watchmaker Arnold Scheurer, died in 1985 at the old age of 97 in Chexbres in the canton of Vaud.
