Rolf Sutter

Rolf Eike Sutter (born July 24, 1944 in Karlsruhe ) is a German heraldist .

Life

Sutter studied German , political science , art history and psychology . He did his doctorate with a study on genealogical structures in Wolframs von Eschenbach Parzival . In 1980 Sutter came into contact with Ottfried Neubecker for the first time . The first meeting turned into a twelve-year collaboration. In 1980, Neubecker appointed Sutter as treasurer of the Wappen-Herold, Deutsche Heraldische Gesellschaft eV association he founded

The first volume of the Allgemeine Deutsche Wappenrolle was published in 1980 under the direction of Sutter and is continued by him to this day. When Neubecker retired in 1992 and died that same year, Sutter began to work internationally.

Working on an international level

Like Neubecker, Sutter worked with “Pro Heraldica” and today looks after its legacy and the library. His lecture from Dublin 2002 "Logo ad Portas" led to the establishment of the "Standing Committee for Contemporary Heraldry" under the umbrella of the International Academy of Heraldry, of which he is one of the founding members and which advocates the creation of universal heraldic principles on a national level .

  • From 1980 to 2016 he was scientific director of the research company Pro Heraldica. He has been a member of the Pro Heraldica Scientific Advisory Board since January 1, 2017.
