Euchloe (Elphinstonia) charlonia is a butterfly from the family of Whites (Pieridae).

features

The moths are extremely variable in size and their upper side is sulfur yellow with dark brown apical spots and a pale outer drawing. The wings are basal black pollinated. The outer edge of the underside of the forewing shows a fine pink line. The discoidal spot is deep black. There are pale, indistinct dark spots on the underside of the hind wings. The hair between the head and thorax is pink in color.

Similar species

  • Euchloe penia ( Freyer , 1851) discoidal spot not deep black, in addition, various features in the genital fittings of the males, as well as the caterpillar and pupa morphology are used for differentiation.

Occurrence

The main distribution area extends from the Canary Islands ( Lanzarote , Fuerteventura , La Graciosa ) and Spain over North Africa , Sudan and the north of Chad as well as over the Middle East ( Saudi Arabia , Syria , Lebanon ) to Pakistan , Turkmenistan and the northwest of India . In the Canary Islands, the species occurs at heights of up to 400 meters, according to other sources up to heights of 800 meters. In Spain ( province of Granada ) it is found at heights of up to 800 meters and in the Atlas Mountains it rises up to 2000 meters.

The species inhabits hot, dry, rocky slopes, arid valleys and oases. In the region of the High Atlas it has been observed that the species summit balz operates at an altitude of 3000 meters.

The females lay the eggs on the underside of the leaf. The forage plants of the caterpillars include various cruciferous and reseda plants . Mainly flowers and fruits are eaten here. Depending on the region, this species trains two or more generations per year. In very arid areas, the slip is regulated by rainfall. In the Canary Islands, the flight time extends from December to May and from September to October. In the north-west of Africa the species flies all year round, here it is more common from February to October. In Spain, the moths fly from late February to late May.
