Rolf Zundel (forest scientist)

Rolf Zundel (born March 20, 1929 in Brackenheim ; † October 17, 2019 ) was a German forest scientist . He was a non-fiction author, among other things, on forest policy, forest history and nature and landscape protection. Zundel was head of the institute and lecturer at the Georg-August University in Göttingen .

Life

Rolf Zundel was born during the Weimar Republic as the son of Adolf Zundel and Lina Zundel, née Böttinger, in Brackenheim ( Württemberg ).

Rolf Zundel obtained his degree in forestry from the University of Freiburg in 1952 and from the same year initially worked as a forestry director in Baden-Württemberg. On March 8, 1958, he married Ursula Sachsenheimer, with whom he later raised the three sons Jörg, Frank-Peter and Axel. In the meantime, Zundel obtained his degree as a doctor of natural sciences in Freiburg in 1959, and from 1962 to 1974 headed the landscape conservation and water management technology department at the Baden-Württemberg Forest Research Institute in Freiburg. In 1971, also in Freiburg, he obtained the title of Doctor habilitatus .

In 1975 Rolf Zundel was appointed to the University of Göttingen, where he headed the Institute for Forest Policy, Timber Market Studies, Forest History and Nature Conservation until his retirement in 1994 . In the same year he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .

Zundel's numerous publications, including in specialist journals , include his Introduction to Forest Science , published in 1990, and the presentation of 50 Years of Forest Policy in Germany, published in 1996 together with Ekkehard Schwartz . (1945 to 1994) .

In addition to his journalistic activities, Rolf Zundel "[...] also maintained international contacts in China, Hungary, Turkey and Mexico, where he was a visiting professor ." He was often seen "outside" in the countryside, where he was among other things planted numerous trees.
