Romantik Hotel Gmachl

The Romantik Hotel Gmachl is a hotel in Elixhausen ( Austria ), five kilometers north of Salzburg . The business has been run by the Gmachl family for several generations. In 2007 the Austrian Chamber of Commerce honored the hotel as Austria's oldest family business .

The property was first mentioned in 1334 as a half courtyard and tavern . Originally, the bailiff Georg appears as the owner, who collected taxes from neighboring farmers for the Benedictine convent Nonnberg. In the next generations, the farm will be managed in the first Nonnberg land register under the annotation "Filius" (= son). In 1470 there is an entry under the surname "Elixhauser". In addition to agriculture, cattle trade, butchery and the tavern were considered sources of income.

The name Elixhauser disappeared when, in 1787, Theresia Elixhauser married the restaurateur Johann Georg Gmachl, a butcher from Bergheim . In 1798, the descendant Michael Gmachl donated a significant share for the expansion of the local church. Many weddings, funerals and church ceremonies were then hosted by him as the "church host". During the church renovation, the dining room was used as a place of worship, and the primary school was also housed in the property.

Around the 19th century the first profits were made by the beginning of tourism . The Salzburger Land developed into a holiday destination. The increasing number of overnight stays favored new investments. This is how today's hotel was created.

The hotel has more than 70 guest rooms, a spa area, outdoor facilities for summer and winter activities, a butcher's shop and a tennis park.

Awards

In 2014 the hotel received the Austrian pension award for a health promotion project for the 90 employees, awarded by the state of Lower Austria. In 2013 it was voted Austrian “Employer of the Year” by the catering trade magazine Rollingpin Jobs & Business and has been awarded the best for people employer certification from the Hogast purchasing cooperative every year since 2010 . The restaurant guide Gault Millau rated regional cuisine, Dragan Miljkovic at the hotel restaurant gourmet restaurant Gmachl Salzburg prepared since 2009 with a hood .
