The Rombaksfjord or Rombaken is the innermost branch of the Ofotfjord in Norway .

geography

It is located in the municipality of Narvik in the Ofoten region in the province of Nordland , north and east of the port city of Narvik .

The fjord, which is surrounded by towering mountains, is around 20 km long and up to 344 m deep. At its confluence with the Ofotfjord it is about 1.4 km wide, at its widest point about 4 km. On the last 10 km from the Rombaksbrücke to the east, the Rombaksbotn, it is only about 1 km wide.

The European route 6 , coming from Narvik, runs along the south bank of the fjord, crosses it on the Rombaks Bridge and then continues north. On the north bank of the Rombaksfjord, it runs a few kilometers together with the European route 10 coming from Kiruna in northern Sweden and leading to Lofoten .

The Hålogaland Bridge , a suspension bridge over the confluence of the Rombaksford in the Ofotfjord, has shortened the route on the E 6 from Narvik to Bjerkvik and Harstad by 17 km and that from Narvik on the E 10 to Bjørnfjell by 5 km since its completion in December 2018 .
