Romina Barth

Romina Barth (* 1983 in Torgau ) is a German politician ( CDU ). Since September 21, 2015, she has been Lord Mayor of the city of Torgau in the northern Saxony district . Barth is the youngest female mayor in the Free State of Saxony .

Career

Romina Barth was born in Torgau, as were her parents. A grandfather was the mayor of Mahitzschen , a municipality in the Torgau district .

After a bank apprenticeship in Torgau, she worked for ten years in the real estate industry as a project developer. In addition to projects in and around Dresden, she was the builder for Torgau Residential and Commercial Real Estate GmbH and supervised the project of a commercial park on the site of the Torgau brewery, which was closed in 2011.

Since the end of 2017 she has been in a private relationship with Jens Sembdner , a member of the German music group Die Prinzen .

Political career

Candidacy and election

From 2014 Romina Barth sat on the city council of Torgau. In February 2015 she was nominated by the CDU as an opposing candidate for Andrea Staude , a civil engineer and member of the SPD , who had been in office since 2001 and was born in Torgau . During the election campaign, issues such as the dying city center and the question of the location of an asylum seekers' home were in the foreground.

On June 28, Barth won the mayoral election with 50.2 percent (3885) of the votes cast. That was a lead of 37 votes over Andrea Staude (3848 votes). At the age of 32, Barth was elected Germany's youngest female mayor.

Because of an election protest by a politician from the party Die Linke Sachsen , Michael Bagusat-Sehrt, Barth was unable to take office directly, but was elected administrator by the city council in September 2015. Bagusat-Sehrt claimed that the election campaign strategy of the CDU was not compatible with the electoral law, as the Prime Minister of Saxony, Stanislaw Tillich of the CDU, had advertised Romina Barth. On April 26, 2016, the Leipzig Administrative Court ruled that Tillich had not violated the principle of neutrality. The election was declared valid.

Other offices

Romina Barth is a member of the CDU parliamentary group in the district council of Northern Saxony . In November 2019 she was elected as an assessor on the board of the regional association of the CDU in the Free State of Saxony.

Political priorities

Barth is committed to strengthening the infrastructure in the region, promoting youth work and increasing tourism in the region.

During her term of office, she agreed to host the Torgau State Horticultural Show in 2022 , a major project from which the Mayor not only hopes for more tourism and a broader range of cultural activities, but also for strong economic growth.

Barth occasionally commented in the press on right-wing marches or music events that take place in or around Torgau. Regarding the incidents during a visit by Angela Merkel in September 2017, she said:

“It makes me sad that democracy was so trampled on in Torgau. But you also have to see that there were many from the outside who misbehaved. Of course, this is a shame for my city. In my opinion, it is okay to take to the streets and demonstrate for your cause. But you don't get into a dialogue with whistling and yelling. I take off my hat to the people who then had to go through the counter-demonstrators who were jostled and tricked into. I am glad that there was no violence here. "

Town twinning

Torgau maintains partnership relationships with two cities abroad and with Sindelfingen in Baden-Württemberg . In November 2019, Romina Barth asked the city council to dissolve the 22-year partnership with the Polish city of Striegau . The reason for this was the considerable damage to a Torgau hotel when a delegation from Poland visited in October 2019. The controversial decision was passed with a narrow majority.
