Romulea ramiflora is a plant from the genus romulea ( Romulea ) in the family of the Iridaceae (Iridaceae).

Romulea ramiflora is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 15 to 40 centimeters. This geophyte forms tubers as permanent organs, these are small and egg-shaped and willingly form offshoots. The shaft is short, at the fruiting time it is greatly elongated and reaches up to 30 centimeters. It is one to four, rarely up to six flowered and has up to 10 centimeters long fruit stalks. The leaves measure 60 to 300 × 1 to 1.5 millimeters. The supporting leaflets are largely herbaceous, clearly annoyed and more or less stiff.

The flowering period extends from February to March. The bracts are 15 to 20 millimeters long and 3 to 5 millimeters wide. They are light to deep purple-blue, often lighter to white on the upper part. The nerves are darker. The capsule is cylindrical to slightly club-shaped.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 60.

Occurrence

Romulea ramiflora occurs in the Mediterranean region on rocky ground, sandy coasts and moist sandy soils. In Crete it inhabits altitudes from 0 to 750 meters.

Systematics

Romulea melitensis is closely related , both species belong to the group around Romulea columnae .

One can distinguish between two subspecies:

  • Romulea ramiflora subsp. gaditana (Kunze) Marais : It occurs in Morocco and in the southern and southwestern Iberian Peninsula.
  • Romulea ramiflora subsp. ramiflora : It occurs in the Mediterranean area.
