Ronald "Ron" Howells (born August 3, 1935 in Ferndale , † August 2014 in Wolverhampton ) was a Welsh football player . The winger was part of the Wolverhampton Wanderers ' championship team in the 1957/58 season , but did not get there beyond the role of supplementary player.
Athletic career
Howells was signed by Wolverhampton Wanderers in November 1952 , having previously played for Nuneaton Borough . Mostly used in the position of outside runner , he came in the closing stages of the 1955/56 season to his first league appearances and he played the last seven games, starting with the debut on April 3, 1956 against Aston Villa (0-0). Almost two years later, in the 1957/58 championship season, he played two league games in a row against Newcastle United (3-1) and Chelsea (2-1). From then on, however, he received no more probation opportunities in the first team and in March 1959 he moved to Portsmouth FC , who shortly after relegated bottom of the table in the second division.
Although Howells was now part of the permanent staff in Portsmouth, but after two more years he had to accept another relegation to the third division in mid-1961 . Howells remained in the second division, however, as he found a new employer there in June 1961 with Scunthorpe United . There he was in the starting line-up in 69 league games over the next two years before moving on to FC Walsall , who had recently been relegated to the third division . His involvement in Walsall was short-lived and after the bribery scandal in English football became known, Howells was also accused and ultimately banned for half a year. In fact, this ended his professional career in football.
Howell passed away in August 2014 at the age of 79.
