Ronald Samuel Rivlin (born May 6, 1915 in London , † October 4, 2005 in Palo Alto ) was a British-American applied mathematician and expert on the mechanics of rubber.

Life

Rivlin studied at Cambridge University with a bachelor's degree in 1937, a master's degree in 1939 and a doctorate in mathematics in 1952. From 1937 to 1942 he carried out research at General Electric in their research laboratories and from 1942 to 1944 he was a scientific officer at the Ministry of Aircraft Production and the Telecommunications Research Establishment . From 1944 to 1952 he conducted research at the British Rubber Producers Research Association, was a visiting scientist at the National Bureau of Standards in the USA from 1946/47 and from 1947 to 1952 a researcher at the Davy-Faraday Research Laboratory of the Royal Institution in London. In 1952/53 he was a consultant for the US Naval Research Laboratories. In 1953 he was visiting professor at Caltech and from 1953 professor of applied mathematics at Brown University . From 1958 to 1963 he headed the applied mathematics department and from 1963 he was L. Herbert Ballou University professor . From 1967 to 1980 he was director of the Center for Applied Mathematics (and Centennial University Professor ) at Lehigh University , where he retired in 1981.

Rivlin made significant contributions to the modern theory of large elastic deformations from the end of the 1940s and in the 1950s (among other things, he introduced Neo-Hookesche solids and Rivlin-Mooney solids in this context in 1948 and developed the finite elasticity theory to describe Rubber and similar substances) and the theory of non-Newtonian liquids.

He received honorary doctorates from the National University of Ireland , the University of Nottingham (1980), Tulane University (1982), the University of Thessaloniki (1984). In 1958 he received the Bingham Medal of the Society of Rheology (of which he was President), in 1987 the Tymoshenko Medal , in 1993 the Von Karman Medal and in 1975 the Panetti Prize of the Academy of Sciences in Turin. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1958), the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the Society of Rheology and the American Physical Society . He was an honorary member of the Royal Irish Academy and the Accademia dei Lincei . In 1981 he received the Alexander von Humboldt Senior US Scientist Award.

In 1961/62 he was a Guggenheim Fellow in Rome and in 1966/67 he was visiting professor at the University of Paris. In 1984/85 he was a Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin. From 1976 to 1978 he was a member of the US National Committee for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics.

In 1955 he became a US citizen. He has been married since 1948 and has one son.
