List of grape varieties

The red grape variety Rondo is an interspecific cross ( hybrid grape ) from the varieties Zarya Severa x St. Laurent , but still belongs to the Vitis vinifera family. It was crossed in 1964 by V. Kraus in what was then Czechoslovakia . He offered it to Helmut Becker (1927–1990) at the Geisenheim Research Station , who recognized the importance of this material and further processed it in terms of breeding. The Rondo grape variety has enjoyed plant variety protection since 1997 .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The very early ripening variety has high resistance to winter frost and downy mildew . However, annual treatments are necessary against powdery mildew . It produces a ruby red, full-bodied wine that is suitable as a cover wine for blends . The Rondo is also very suitable as a stand-alone wine. It results in very rich, dark and complex red wines . The smell and taste are strongly reminiscent of dark cherries and blackberries (→ aromas in wine ). The demands of the new breed on the location are as high as with Riesling , but the demands on the soil are comparatively low. The variety is grown in Rheinhessen , Franconia , Switzerland (1.01 hectares, status 2007, source: Office fédéral de l'agriculture OFAG), Denmark , Sweden, England, Ireland and the Netherlands.

Despite the influence of Vitis amurensis within the mother variety Zarya Severa, Rondo is officially a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
