Location of Roombeek-Roomveldje in the municipality of Enschede |
Roombeek is a district of Enschede . It was only after the explosion of the fireworks factory in Enschede that this name came about for the affected area. Before the explosion, today's Roombeek was part of Mekkelholt and Enschede-noord. The explosion in the Bamshoeve in Enschede on May 13, 2000 completely destroyed 42 hectares of the city. Only the remains of a few larger buildings remained. Over time, the district was largely rebuilt. Roombeek has 4,460 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2017).
In the planning phase, both urban planning and the various construction projects were made much less than is generally customary. In Roombeek, mundane residential buildings stand alongside outstanding architecture, which has an almost sculptural character. The urban planning architect Pi de Bruijn designed the district. In 2008 Queen Beatrix opened the Het Rozendaal cultural center. In Roombeek, the reconstruction was carried out by individual clients and not, as is usual in the Netherlands, on behalf of building companies.
Award
In 2007 the city of Enschede received the Gouden Piramide architecture prize, endowed with € 50,000, for the design and realization of the Roombeek district.
