Rory Collins
Sir Rory Edwards Collins (born January 3, 1955 in Hong Kong ) is a British epidemiologist .
Collins earned in 1977 at the George Washington University in Washington, DC a Bachelor in statistics , in 1981 at St Thomas' Hospital Medical School of London University graduate his medical studies and in 1983 at the University of Oxford a Master in statistics. Since 1981 Collins has been working at the Clinical Trial Service Unit & Epidemiological Studies Unit (CTSU) at Oxford University, which he took over as head of 1985 - together with Richard Peto .
In 1996, Collins was appointed Professor of Internal Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Oxford. Since 2005 he has also led a prospective study carried out by UK Biobank on 500,000 Britons between 40 and 69 years of age.
Collins is a leader in planning and conducting large-scale epidemiological studies, particularly on the causes, prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease and cancer . He also played a leading role in the further development of the meta-analysis instrument .
Thomson Reuters ranks Collins among the favorites for a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine ( Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates ). In 2011, Collins was named a Knight Bachelor , and in 2015 he was elected to the Royal Society .
