Rose Gertrude Namajunas (born 29 June 1992 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) is an American MMA - martial artist and former UFC -Weltweltmeisterin in the straw weight. Namajunas currently competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and is in second place in the official UFC rankings in said weight class (as of September 6, 2019).

Life

Namajunas was born on June 29, 1992 in Milwaukee , both parents are of Lithuanian origin. She grew up largely without her birth father, who suffered from schizophrenia and died when she was 16.

She started out in martial arts at the age of five when she started training in Taekwondo . Shortly after she received her junior black belt , she started other martial arts - namely karate and jiu-jitsu . She finally started with MMA and kickboxing under the American kickboxer Duke Roufus .

She was a wrestler at Milwaukee High School of the Arts.

MMA career

Early years

in 2010, she started taking part in amateur MMA competitions. Her first fight was against Melissa Pacheco at the North American Fighting Championship. She won the fight via technical knockout.

Her last amateur fight took place in June 2012. She defeated the American Jen Aniano and finished her amateur career undefeated with a record of four wins and zero losses. Two of these victories were through technical knockout and two through judges' decisions.

Invicta Fighting Championship

She gave her first professional fight on January 5, 2013 against Emily Kagan, who was also debuting at the time. Namajunas won the fight in the third round with a rear-naked choke. This win earned her the Submission of the Night bonus . On April 5, 2013 she defeated Kathina Catron via the flying armbar in the first round. For this, too, she won a Submission of the Night bonus.

In July 2013 she faced the American Tecia Torres at Invicta FC 6: Coenen vs. Cyborg. She lost the fight via a unanimous judge's decision.

The Ultimate Fighter Season 20

In 2013 the Ultimate Fighting Championship implemented the straw weight class . Through the twentieth season of the television series The Ultimate Fighter , the first female world champion should be determined. Together with ten other athletes , she competed for the still unoccupied title. Her first opponent was the Australian Alex Chambers. She won the competition with a stranglehold. In the quarterfinals she competed against the Scottish MMA fighter and Muay Thai champion Joanne Calderwood . She won the fight via task hold (Kimura) in the second round. In the semifinals she defeated Randa Markos in the first round, also via Kimura grip.

final

After victories over Alex Chambers, Joanne Calderwood and Randa Markos, she placed in the Ultimate Fighter Final against Carla Esparza. The competition took place on December 12, 2014 at the Palms Casino Resort Las Vegas.

Namajunas was clearly inferior to the experienced Esparza. Unable to neutralize the wrestling Esparzas, she lost the fight via a stranglehold in round 3.

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Nina Ansaroff

A match between Namajunas and Nina Ansaroff was planned for UFC 187 on May 23, 2015. Ansaroff did not manage to reach the necessary weight limit of 52 kilos, which is why she was withheld 20 percent of her pay. The fight was later completely canceled due to Ansaroff's health reasons.

Instead, she met Angela Hill on UFC 192 in Houston, Texas in October of that year . After some exchanges of blows while standing, Hill was brought to the ground. In attempting to maintain a stance, Namajunas was able to use a stranglehold and win the fight. The fight lasted 2:47 minutes.

Paige VanZant

Namajunas competed in the main event of the UFC Fight Night 80 on December 10, 2015. Joanne Calderwood was planned as an opponent, but she was injured. Paige VanZant was selected as a replacement. Vanzant came from a four-fold series of victories, but had to admit defeat clearly against Namajunas.

Namajunas landed countless significant hits and take-downs before finally forcing Vanzant to surrender in the fifth round with a stranglehold . This was her third victory via rear naked choke .

Tecia Torres

On April 16, 2016, Namajunas met the previously undefeated Tecia Torres as part of UFC on Fox 19, who had already won a victory against her years earlier.

Namajunas won the fight via a unanimous point decision.

Karolina Kowalkiewicz

On July 30, 2016, Namajunas and Karolina Kowalkiewicz met at the UFC 201 event. The fight went into the third round and Kowalkiewicz was able to get a non-unanimous judge's decision (split decision).

Both opponents received the Fight of the Night bonus .

Michelle Waterson

On April 15, 2017 Namajunas met the "Invicta FC Atomweight Championship" champion Michelle Waterson as part of UFC on Fox: Johnson vs. Rice.

Namajunas controlled large parts of the pace and caused heavy damage to the ground.

Waterson was able to use knee kicks and visibly impair Namajuna's ability to move until she placed a head kick and sent Waterson to the mat, where she could use a stranglehold again a little later and won the fight.

This was Namajuna's fifth victory via submission .

Winning the world title

After her victory against Michelle Waterson, Namajunas was awarded the title fight against undefeated champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk . The competition took place in Madison Square Garden , New York as part of UFC 217: Bisping vs. St-Pierre.

Jędrzejczyk defended her title for the fifth time in a row and went into the fight as the clear favorite.

After around two and a half minutes, Namajunas scored a knockdown when she moved in with a jab-cross combination. Jędrzejczyk was able to straighten up, but was brought back to the ground a minute later, where Namajunas was able to end the fight via knockout.

A rematch against Joanna Jędrzejczyk was scheduled for April 7, 2018 under UFC 223. The fight went over the full five rounds and Namajunas came to a unanimous judge victory.

Loss of title against Jéssica Andrade

Another title defense took place on May 11, 2019 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The title challenger was the Brazilian Jéssica Andrade.

Namajunas lost the fight via knockout in the second round. Andrade hit Namajunas and won the fight via throw knockout.

Personal

Namajunas is engaged to former MMA fighter and kickboxer Pat Barry.

She is committed to understanding mental illness.
