Rosemary Theby
Rosemary Theresa Theby (born April 8, 1892 in St. Louis , Missouri , † November 10, 1973 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actress of the silent and early talkies era. In the period from 1911 to 1940 she appeared in almost 250 films.
Life
Rosemary Theby spent her youth in New York City and attended Sargent's School there. She received her first film role in 1911. Theby worked for Vitagraph in the following years , before moving to Universal Studios in 1915 .
Until the fall of the silent film era, Theby was seen in dozens of film productions, often impersonating the leading female actress. In 1918 she played a German spy in the war drama The Great Love, directed by David Wark Griffith . In 1927 Theby made a small appearance as a dinner guest in Laurel and Hardy: The Second Hundred Years . With the advent of the talkie, the number of her roles decreased, but Theby continued to enjoy success as an actress. In 1933 she played the leading female role in the short comedy The Fatal Glass of Beer . Theby had one last small film appearance in 1940 in Tumak, the lord of the jungle .
Theby worked exclusively as a film actress. She turned down offers for stage roles by Chauncey Olcott despite a high fee.
Rosemary Theby married the actor, screenwriter and director Harry Myers in 1915 . After Myers died in 1938, she married Truitt Hughes that same year, which lasted until her death. Theby was also politically active and, among other things, publicly supported the election campaign of the future US President Calvin Coolidge .
Rosemary Theby died on November 10, 1973 at the age of 81 of circulatory shock in Los Angeles. She was buried in Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery .
