history

Rosettenville was named after the surveyor Leo (or Levin) Rosettenstein, who surveyed and planned the area before the 1889 gold rush. He named some streets after relatives.

In 1903, the Anglican Church founded the seminary of St Peter's Theological College on the eastern edge of the district . Her most famous graduate is Desmond Tutu . In 1908, the St. Agnes School was opened on the site , which a few years later was expanded to St. Peter's Priory and College . It became known as St. Peter's College under the direction of Trevor Huddleston . The school was known as Black Eton because it trained blacks at a high level. Well-known students were Oliver Tambo , Hugh Masekela and Arthur Maimane ; Tambo later also worked there as a teacher. In protest against the Bantu Education Act , the school closed in 1956, but later reopened as St. Martin's School .

From the 1920s, many Portuguese immigrants from Portugal or Mozambique settled in Rosettenville. In 1987 the Portuguese opened the first Nando's restaurant in the district. In 2007 the reggae musician Lucky Dube was shot in Rosettenville.
