Ross Handley Brown (born September 8, 1934 in New Plymouth , New Zealand ; † May 20, 2014 ibid) was a New Zealand rugby union player on the position of the connector and inner three quarters . His father Handly and uncle Henry were also New Zealand national rugby players.
life and career
Brown went to King's College in Auckland as a student , where he started playing rugby. In 1953 he was appointed to the team at Taranaki RFU for the first time . In the following year, he was appointed to the selection of the North Island for the then annual game against the South Island .
Due to his performance, he made his debut in 1955 in the New Zealand national team (All Blacks) in the third international match against the Australian national team (Wallabies) touring New Zealand . Although the All Blacks lost the game 3-8, they were able to defend the Bledisloe Cup successfully as they won the two previous international matches.
His greatest triumph in rugby followed a year later when he won the international series with the All Blacks against the South African national team (Springboks) touring New Zealand . It was the first defeat of the Springboks in an international series at all. The New Zealanders won three of their four internationals and lost one. Brown played as the inner three-quarters in the first three games before playing as a connector in the final game. In the second game he succeeded in trying . With his province of Taranaki he also reached a 3-3 draw against the South Africans.
In 1957 he won the Ranfurly Shield against the Otago RFU for the first time with Taranaki . By 1959 the Shield was successfully defended thirteen times before losing it to Southland Rugby . In 1957 and 1958 he also defended the Bledisloe Cup against the Australians with the All Blacks. He also played in the first and third game of the All Blacks in 1959 against the British and Irish Lions, who are touring New Zealand . With three wins and one defeat, the All Blacks were able to decide the international series for themselves.
He did not take part in the New Zealand tour in South Africa in 1960 for family reasons, but was able to regain his place in the national team in 1961. That year the All Blacks played a series of three games against the French national team who had come to New Zealand . Brown appeared in all three internationals, all of which the All Blacks won.
In 1962 he traveled to Australia with New Zealand, where he played in the first international match in a 20: 6 win over the hosts, but then lost his place in the national team. Since the All Blacks also won the second international match, they defended the Bledisloe Cup again.
For Taranaki, he continued to play a major role as team captain, despite not being considered for the All Blacks squad. So he was able to win the Ranfurly Shield against Wellington RFU for the second time with his province in 1963 , and defend it in 15 games until the defeat by Auckland RFU in 1965. In 1968 Brown ended his active rugby career.
