Rostojávri (also Rostujávri , Swedish Råstojaure ) in northern Scandinavia is a 34.24 km² large lake on the border of the Fylke Troms og Finnmark in Norway to the historic province of Lapland in Sweden .

Geography, data and runoff

The Norwegian part of the lake (3.67 km²) lies in the area of the municipality of Målselv in the Troms og Finnmark district and borders the Øvre-Dividal National Park in the south . The significantly larger Swedish (30.57 km²) part is located in the municipality of Kiruna in Norrbotten County in the historical province of Lapland . The lake is about 16 km long and 4 km wide. Its water surface is about 680  m above sea level.

The lake has two outlets and thus forms a lake bifurcation . About 55% of the water runoff runs to the northwest (Norway) into the Råstaelva, an indirect tributary of the Målselva , and finally into the European Arctic Ocean . The rest of the river flows southeast (Sweden) via Råstätno into the Lainioälven, a tributary of the Torneälv , and finally into the Bothnian Bay of the Baltic Sea .

Fishing and wildlife

The lake is fishable for char and grayling , among others . In the trackless area there is still reindeer husbandry.

History and origin of name

The lake is first mentioned in 1559 as Råsta Tresk . Today's spelling is made up of the non-derivable prefix Rosto- , which also occurs in other names in the mountains , and the North Sami jávri for lake .
