The red fly beetle ( Cantharis rufa ) is a beetle from the soft beetle family (Cantharidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 8.5 to 10 millimeters. The head and pronotum are colored light red, the elytra are yellow-brown. The pronotum is broad and rounded, but not semicircular as in the similar variable soft beetle ( Cantharis livida ). In addition, the back corners of the pronotum can be seen on the side. The antennae are bright red, but darker at the ends than at the base. The legs are yellow. Occasionally there are individuals in whom dark spots can be seen behind the compound eyes , or in whom the thighs ( femora ) of the middle and rear pairs of legs, or the entire legs are darkly colored, or in whom an "M" -shaped one on the pronotum dark spot can be seen.

Occurrence

The species occurs in almost all of Europe and also north of the Arctic Circle and on the British Isles . In the east their distribution extends to Siberia . You can find them from the lowlands to low mountain ranges. They are common and often sit on ears of grain.
