Rotifunk is a village in the south of Sierra Leone with 4858 inhabitants (2012). Rotifunk is located in the Moyamba District within the Southern Province and is the headquarters of the Bumpe - Chiefdom . The city is located 96 kilometers southeast of the capital Freetown .

Rotifunk is mostly inhabited by the Sherbro .

Missionaries in Rotifunk

In 1891, the Mission of the Church of the United Brothers in Christ from Miami sent the missionaries Dr. Marietta Hatfield , Dr. Mary C. Archer and Ella M. Scherick to Rotifunk, where they set up a hospital ( Hatfield Archer Memorial Hospital ). All three women were killed in an uprising in 1898 against a tax increase by the British colonial government. The hospital built by the three American women was also destroyed during this uprising.

It wasn't until 1932 that Dr. Mabel Silver from Baltimore again a missionary to Rotifunk and rebuilt the destroyed hospital makeshift. In 1951 a small cement building could be built in which a laboratory, a pharmacy, an operating room and a delivery room were set up. From 1953 onwards, an English missionary Dr. Mabel Silver in Rotifunk, so that from now on local women could also be trained as nurses. When Dr. Mabel Silver retired in 1962, the hospital she rebuilt was able to care for between 500 and 700 births per week.

Rotifunk's hospital was badly damaged during the civil war in Sierra Leone (1991–2002). Since the end of the conflict, various attempts have been made to rebuild the hospital with the help of foreign donors. Since the end of the civil war, the European Commission has supported the reconstruction of the local hospital.
