The red clover Spitzmausrüssler or Dark Clover Spitz mice ( Protapion apricans , Syn. : Apion apricans ) is a beetle from the family of Apionidae .

features

The beetles reach a body length of 2.2 to 3.1 millimeters. Her body is shiny black, several antennae and legs ( femora ) are colored yellow. The rails ( tibia ) of the front legs are a little darker, the knees are even darker. The stem of the antennae is about four times longer than it is wide, the last limbs of the flagellum are just as longer than they are wide and the antennae lobe is widened like a spindle. The somewhat elongated pronotum is structured with large, flat points between which a fine mesh pattern runs. The cover wings are provided with longitudinal rows of dots, the first of them does not reach the base of the cover wings. The deck wings are widest just behind their half. The species can be confused with several very similar species in the genus.

Occurrence

The animals occur in the Palearctic , also north of the Arctic Circle . They are common in the British Isles and are also found in North Africa , the Near and Middle East . They inhabit fields from the plains up to around 2000 meters above sea level and are very common. In Central and Southern Europe there are two, in Fennoscandia one generation per year, whereby the beetles overwinter twice in the far north.

Way of life

The females lay a total of around 200 eggs of 7 to 10 on the flowers of clover plants . The larvae feed on the calyx and stem, the adults cause pitting on the leaves. The red clover shrew weevil can cause significant damage to clover seeds.
