history
The town is named after the Rottenstein castle ruins, which were probably founded in 1142 by the Bavarian Count Palatine Aribo II , the progenitor of the Counts of Gorizia . Until the Peace of Pusarnitz in 1460, the castle was owned by the Gorizians and their ministerials, then it came into the possession of the Habsburgs . In 1528 Archduke Ferdinand sold the castle, including the lordship and court, to the court chancellor Gabriel von Salamanca-Ortenburg . The counts of Ortenburg acquired shortly afterwards Greifenburg and moved then also the seat of their government. In the course of the 16th century, the castle began to fall into ruin and is now in private hands. The associated place originally belonged administratively to Greifenburg. In 1848 the Catholic branch church of St. Mary erected by the good advice. Rottenstein has been part of the Steinfeld community since 1850 .
