The name "Rottkuhle" is derived from the Low German term "rotten". It originally referred to a place where harvested flax should rot .
In the years 1948/1949, the northern part of the lake was expanded into an open-air swimming pool with sheet pile walls. Today the lake is fed by a well that pumps water from a depth of 28 meters.
