The Kuhgrabensee is a quarry pond in the south-east of the Blockland district of Bremen . The Kuhgraben to the east is the traditional border between Blockland and Hollerland . The lake has a surface area of ​​around 17.8 hectares and a maximum depth of 16 meters with an average depth of 13 meters.

The Kuhgrabensee was excavated from 1970 to 1972 as part of the construction of Autobahn 27 . Since July 1987 it has formed a 29.6 hectare nature reserve with its bank area . Between 1998 and 1999 it was expanded to include a flat water area of ​​around 4 hectares as part of an ecological compensation measure. The lake can be viewed from both the Kuhgrabenweg and Mittelweg and is accessible from a lookout hut.

The lake is fed by groundwater and has a high salt content due to the influence of the Lilienthal salt dome. In terms of water quality, the Kuhgrabensee is mesotrophic .

The lake is registered with the EU as a European bird sanctuary . The lake is a habitat for many pioneer plants, dragonflies and amphibians. The Kuhgrabensee is a breeding area for many birds, such as the great crested grebe . In addition to chandelier algae and spawning herbs, there are also water pepper tannels and the threatened coniferous marsh sedge .
