The Borgfelder Wümmewiesen are a nature reserve in the districts of Borgfeld and Oberneuland in the municipality of Bremen .

The nature reserve is 688  hectares . The nature reserve registered in the nature reserve of the city of Bremen under number 7 is the largest nature reserve in the city and the second largest in the country. The nature reserve is for the most part part of the almost 682 hectare EU bird sanctuary of the same name . Part of the protected area is also part of the FFH area “Untere Wümme”. The area has been a nature reserve since April 3, 1987. As early as 1985 it was included in the measures to establish and secure parts of nature and landscape worthy of protection with national representative importance . Since June 2006, the protected area has been looked after by the NordWest Natur Foundation, established in 1999, in cooperation with WWF Germany . The Ordinance on Protected Areas was completely revised by ordinance of May 30, 2015. The responsible nature conservation authority is the Senator for Environment, Building and Transport.

The nature reserve is located northeast of Borgfeld and southeast of Lilienthal in the Wümmeniederung . It borders on the “ Untere Wümme ” nature reserve in the west and the “ Fischerhuder Wümmeniederung ” nature reserve in the east . In the north-west is the former “ Sodenstich ” nature reserve , which was integrated here by ordinance of May 30, 2015.

The area provides a large-scale wetland landscape as a cultural landscape under protection, which is often flooded during the winter months. It is characterized by extensive grasslands with numerous ditches and small bodies of water. The protected area is traversed in the south by the Wümme, in the east it is limited in parts by the Wümme north arm. In the nature reserve, which is largely treeless except for the edge areas, you will find u. a. Small and large sedge Riede , Hochstaudenfluren , reed beds and flood lawn . Parts of the protected area are developing into a natural meadow landscape without any use. Since the late 1980s, numerous small bodies of water have been created that provide a habitat for various amphibians and dragonflies .

On the meadows and pastures , some of which are extensively cultivated, some of which are fallow , settle and the like. a. Marsh marigold , cuckoo flower , cuckoo flower , marsh lice herb , water common groundwort and buttercup. The area is an important breeding area for meadow birds . a. Lapwing , corncrake , curlew , black-tailed godwit , redshank , common snipe , and spotted moorhen are native. The nature reserve is home to a nationwide significant number of rails . The area is also an important resting and wintering area for migratory birds . In the winter months, ducks , geese and swans rest and hibernate here in large numbers.

Several paved paths lead through the nature reserve, on which information boards are set up. There is an observation tower on Hollerdeich on the southern edge of the nature reserve. The Wümme may temporarily be used for water sports with non-motorized vehicles .
