The flood protection polder between Senator-Apelt-Straße and Neustädter Hafen is a nature reserve in the Harbors district of the city of Bremen .

The nature reserve is 84.7 hectares and is registered in the nature reserve book of the city of Bremen under number 18. The area has been under protection since April 2, 2014. It has been named an Important Bird Area since 2002 and meets the requirements for reporting an area under the EU Birds Directive . The responsible nature conservation authority is the Senator for Environment, Building and Transport .

The nature reserve is located in the Neustädter Hafen district to the west of the Neustädter Hafen port facilities (Basin II), to which it is directly adjacent. To the west it borders on Senator-Apelt-Straße and the Bremen freight center . The polder was originally intended as an extension of the Neustädter Hafen, which was built in the early 1960s. As a result of the construction of storm surge barriers on tributaries of the Lower Weser ( Huntes barriers , Ochtums barriers and Lesums barriers ), the area was established as a flood protection polder in 1971 . It is dammed and provided with an overflow threshold to the Weser .

The area is flooded irregularly by floods in the Weser. Large parts of it are not used for agriculture, parts of it are used as wet grassland . The unused areas are occupied by alluvial forest and other woody trees, near-natural still waters , reed beds and ruderal areas . The area is of particular importance to various birds . So here are u. a. Marsh harrier , short-eared owl , bittern , reeds and reed warbler , Bluethroat , shelduck , teal , Gadwall , Spotted Crake and black-necked grebe home. A total of over 50 breeding bird species were counted. The area is also important as a resting area for birds. Furthermore, the waters and wet meadows offer a suitable habitat for various amphibians and numerous dragonflies , including the little mosaic damsel and the spotted darter . Large pond clams and small piston water beetles can also be found in the still waters .

Special plant occurrences are z. B. Occurrence of white willow , iris and purple loosestrife , but also swan flower or water pepper tannel.
