The protected area is located south of the A 27 between the city forest , a campsite in the east and another campsite and the Stadtwaldsee in the west. The area was created when the Stadtwaldsee was excavated in the course of sand extraction for the construction of the University of Bremen and the expansion of the federal motorway 27 . Today's protected area was part of an area that was used to deposit overburden and was left to its own devices in the following years. So it is a typical secondary biotope . At the beginning of the 1980s, part of the area was surrounded by a moat. This area was officially placed under nature protection on March 16, 1991. There are several ponds in the reserve.

The area belongs to the University of Bremen. The responsible nature conservation authority is the Senator for Environment, Building and Transport. The maintenance is incumbent on the association "Friends of the University Wilderness", which finances all measures through membership fees and donations. In particular, the proximity to the intensively used Stadtwaldsee make regular waste removal necessary.

According to the protection provisions of the Nature Conservation Area Ordinance, numerous uses of the area to avoid encroachment are prohibited, such as open fire or the removal of plants.
