Roundell Palmer, 1st Earl of Selborne
Roundell Palmer, 1st Earl of Selborne PC (born November 27, 1812 in Mixbury , Oxfordshire , † May 4, 1895 ) was a British lawyer and politician.
Life
He attended rugby school and Winchester College . He graduated from Oxford University in 1834 and received his master's degree in 1836. There he also met his friend Frederick William Faber . In 1837 he was admitted to the bar.
In 1847 he became a member of the House of Commons and helped found the Liberal Party in 1859. Under Henry Temple he served as Solicitor General between 1861 and 1863 and as Attorney General between 1863 and 1866. Under William Ewart Gladstone , he was elected Lord Chancellor in 1872 and Baron Selborne , of Selborne in the County of Southampton. From 1880 to 1885 he was again Lord Chancellor under Gladstone and in 1882 was elevated to Earl of Selborne and Viscount Wolmer , of Blackmoor in the County of Southampton.

Selborne married Lady Laura in 1848, daughter of William Waldegrave, 8th Earl Waldegrave . Their son William Palmer, 2nd Earl of Selborne later became a well-known Unionist politician.
