The Rous River is a river in the extreme northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales .

history

The river is named after the British naval officer and bon vivant Henry John Rous (1795–1877), who explored the area around the Richmond River and the Tweed River from 1828 .

In January 2006, only partially treated wastewater from emergency tanks and ponds at the Murwillumbah sewage works entered the river. The sewage treatment plant was shut down due to damage and was overfilled by the city's sewage. Biological examinations of the river water showed that the pollution was too great, so bathing was temporarily prohibited.

In 2007, the New South Wales government proposed damming the Rous Rivers, Oxley Rivers, and Byrill Creek . The resistance of the local residents was so great that a campaign called Save the Caldera Rivers was formed to prevent the construction of the dams.

course

The Rous River has its source at Numinbah on the southeastern slopes of the McPherson Range near the Queensland border . From there it flows east and flows into the Tweed River at Tumbulgum between Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads .
