The Rowuma was a ship of the governorate of the German East Africa colony and thus belonged to the flotilla of the protected area.

history

The Rowuma was built in Kiel in 1894 for use in the German East Africa colony . The sea-going steamer was stationed in the port of Dar es Salaam and was used, among other things, as a customs cruiser. The ship was named after the Rowuma River in German East Africa. The Rowuma was armed with two 3.7 cm ring cannons . In 1907/08 it was lengthened by 6 m by installing a middle section. This increased the ship's dimensions from 28.62 m to 34.62 m in length, from 115 to 144 GRT and from 200 t to around 250 t of ship weight.

After the outbreak of World War I in August 1914, Rowuma was assigned to the Delta Department on September 26, 1914 . The ship supported the security and supply of the small cruiser Königsberg lying in the Rufidji estuary . On October 9, 1915, the Rowuma sank itself in the Rufidji estuary.
